Stylish must-have #1: Cool shades

March 5, 2015

I struggled a bit before adding a “Fashion” category to my blog. I really tried to resist the urge as there are so many super stylish fashion bloggers out there. How would I make a mark? But then I kept being asked by friends “When will you talk about fashion? You’re so stylish!”

Not to toot my own horn, but I do know how to pull together a nice outfit and how to select beautiful clothes and fashion accessories. I owe my fashion savvy sense to my stylish mother, always on trend and so creative when it comes to putting an ensemble together. My best friend Tania is another one of my subtly sexy fashion inspirations. So I just had to.

I’ve decided to vaguely base myself on my all time favorite coffee table book, Nina Garcia’s “The one hundred: A guide to the pieces every stylish woman must own”. Nina Garcia has been Fashion Director at Elle and Marie Claire magazines, so this is no laughing matter.

Stylish must-have #1: Cool shades

Anyone who’s ever seen Top Gun knows the importance of having a cool pair of shades to indeed cement your cool status. Aviators universally flatter most faces, and I consider them to be an essential staple, so does Nina Garcia. Should you not like aviators, there are so many styles out there to pick from but make sure you select a pair that suits you.

Things to consider:

  • The shape of your face: Heart shaped faces look amazing in aviator sunglasses. Oval shaped faces can pretty much go for anything; everything suits them, lucky bastards. Square faces look good with circular frames. Round faces need square or rectangular frames to balance it all out.
  • Size and embellishments: Should you wish to look glamorous or mysterious, stick with an
oversized pair. I tend to do that. It’s also amazing for when I want to take my dog out for a walk and I don’t have any make up on; I put on a pair of big glasses and nobody can see a thing, yet I look damn cool. You can also opt for funky colors or side embellishments if you have a unique sense of style.

  • Lenses: Mirrored, polarized, etc. there are so many out there to choose from. Just make sure your eyes are protected. I’m no expert in lenses so I suggest you speak to someone in store.
  • Budget: I personally say to invest in a good expensive pair that will last you a long time. But then again I have expensive taste. You can just as easily get a good pair for less than USD20. I personally own a Chanel pair and Ray-Ban aviators which I cannot detach myself from.

Whatever pair of shades you pick, make sure your eyes are well protected from the sun’s rays and more importantly,  that you look like hot shit.
