Stylish must-have #2: The classic investment bag

March 14, 2015

I love love love my bags. I spend more on purses than I do on clothes, and probably food.  That explains why my fridge is often empty. I always say that a woman with a gorgeous purse, nice shoes, and fabulous looking hair will automatically turn heads. It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing a t-shirt and jeans and don’t have any makeup on; just these three items and you’ll look classy and beautiful.

Sure, there are many different types of purses out there; hobo bags, satchels, clutches etc. But what I’m talking about here is the investment classic bag. It has to be structured, preferably in a neutral color, and large enough to fit your essentials such as wallet, car keys, cell phone etc. It’s the bag you can spend a couple of thousand dollars on (or more) but not feel guilty about. It won’t go out of style and you’ll probably pass it on to your daughter. I still wear some of my mother’s classic LV bags she bought when she was 18 years’ old!

I tend to invest in a classic expensive purse once a year. My latest is this stunning cobalt blue Saint-Laurent classic Sac de Jour bag. It’s perfect for the office and casual dinners or day outings. The color goes with almost everything and it’s sturdy yet not heavy.

I also have a love affair with Chanel. Oh Chanel, you take my breath away every time! Last year I bought the Chanel 2.55 with a double-chain shoulder strap in beige and gold. I didn’t buy it just anywhere either. I bought it in Paris in the first ever Chanel shop Coco Chanel set up in Paris, 21 rue Cambon. Her private apartment was on the second floor.

A Chanel is a quintessential classic; I strongly believe every woman should purchase one at some point in her life. Yes I know, they’re pricey, but trust me you won’t regret it!

By now you should know I love dishing out tips. Hence, when selecting your classic investment bag, look out for the following:

Design: It should be of a classic design, nothing funky or currently in vogue.
Color: Stick to neutral colors if you can, like black, beige, grey, or even blue. I love a bag with a pop of color but do make sure you can use it as often as you would like.
Weight: There are so many ridiculously heavy bags out there so unless you plan on weight lifting all day long, make sure your bag doesn’t weigh 5kgs on its own!
Brand: Go big or go home. I’m talking Chanel (duh), Hermes (although I do find the Hermes Birkin bag to be way too heavy and inconvenient for my liking), Dior, Chloe, Saint-Laurent, Celine, Louis Vuitton, Mulberry and the likes. You want something of outstanding quality.
Make sure you absolutely love the purse: Like you want to go to bed with it every night. Don’t just buy it for the status that comes along (or so you think) with the brand.
